Personal Insights
What do you enjoy most about being a Portfolio Manager?
I enjoy being directly responsible for helping clients achieve their long-term financial goals. That is incredibly rewarding. It is also a career that allows me to be constantly learning and discovering new things.
What was your journey to the investment world and NPF specifically?
Growing up, my father introduced me to the investment world – sitting next to him on our sofa while he explained things in the Wall Street Journal and Barron’s, or just watching Wall Street Week with Louis Rukeyser.
What are the values that drive you in your professional and personal life?
Integrity, hard work, passion, and respect, for one’s self and for others, are the core values that inspire me. I believe they also transcend cultures, are nearly universal, and are held in common by the people who I most admire.
Is there an experience that influenced you most?
Studying abroad for a year at the University of Warwick in England.
What is your favorite thing to do in Grand Rapids?
Spending time with my wife and two daughters. One of our favorite activities is watching and listening to the Harry Potter performances with the Grand Rapids orchestra.
What is your favorite book?
A Supposedly Fun Thing I’ll Never Do Again by David Foster Wallace.
What is your most unique or fulfilling achievement outside of work?
Being the father of two amazing daughters. I also enjoy sharing Dad Jokes with them, although they do not find them as humorous as I do.
What do you enjoy doing in your free time?
Working on projects in my yard and on my house. This past summer I spread 25 yards of mulch in the trees behind my house, hung some lights, brought in a few picnic tables and created a quaint family outdoor space.
